It is with great sadness that we share the news that Italian genre film grandmaster, screenwriter and director Ruggero Deodato has passed away.
Ruggero Deodato learned how to direct from Roberto Rossellini and Sergio Corbucci. He gained worldwide fame with cult horror film Cannibal Holocaust (1980), which shocked the public upon release. We will also remember him for numerous other masterpieces, such as police thriller Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976), cannibal adventure The Last Cannibal World (1977), violent home invasion thriller The House on the Edge of the Park (1980) and tense action film Cut and Run (1985). Moist recently, he directed a short film for the Deathcember anthology (2019), which was also screened at Grossmann.
In 2009, he visited us as the guest of honour and received the Honorary Vicious Cat award. We also honoured him with a selected retrospective of his films. We will forever remember the days when we were able to enjoy his company, for there sadly won’t be another time. But there will always be his films, with their vivid force and unstoppable energy that will always remind us of him. Farewell, maestro!
